It Takes a Village to Find a Village: Solving complex problems with diverse geospatial tools.

The tools we are learning this week are all quite powerful on their own, but like this community, nothing can compare to their power when they work in unison to build solutions to seemingly intractable problems. In this talk I give an overview of a recent project that was supported by the Stanford Geospatial Center that made use of a diverse set of tools including: OpenStreetMap, Humanitarian OSM Task Manager, DigitalGlobe imagery, QGIS, ArcMap, ArcGIS Online, massive high-resolution screen arrays and the OSM community.

I am originally from Bluff / Awarua where I spent most of my childhood before moving to the big smoke in Invercargill during my high school years. I’ve spent the past three years in Christchurch working for Ngāi Tahu, firstly as an intern for two years before securing myself a GIS role. I feel very privileged to be working in the GIS space and I see GIS as a tool that can be applied to many disciplines. I see the power in utilising GIS to create better outcomes for our iwi/whānau.  Working for my own iwi and an organisation that has such a diverse scope of mahi and GIS needs ensures that I am constantly learning new things!
